Abstract
The goal of this essay is to explain why communication has not been reduced to a science in the 70 years since Shannon published his seminal Mathematical Theory of Communication, and, more pointedly, why data science is powerless to stop the proliferation of conspiracy theories. We depend on axiomatic choice for the selection of initial conditions, models, and images because loss functions have no foundation in reality. Axiomatic choice brings with it the essential irony of information, which cannot be eliminated through scientific distillation. Pedagogically, this means that the present educational focus on measurable results to the exclusion of imagination and aesthetic judgment is a dead end for communication from which there is no escape, even in theory.
