Abstract
"Rio Tinto in Australia, The Origins and Formation of an International Resources Company 1954 - 1995" is a comprehensive and independent history of Rio Tinto and CRA in Australia. The book covers the company's development from its listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1873 to its formation as Rio Tinto (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1953 and its subsequent merger with The Consolidated Zinc Limited in 1962. The book explores the intersecting politics of the time and the impact of foreign countries and world economics on the company. It also provides insights into the individuals involved and their working relationships. The book is organized into themes and includes timelines, short chapters, and references, making it approachable and useful as a reference text. It discusses key projects such as Mary Kathleen Uranium, Hamersley Ranges' iron ore, Bougainville copper-gold, bauxite deposits at Weipa, the Argyle diamond mine, and coal and base metal mining operations. The attempts at Australianization and the relationship between CRA and its London-based parent, RTZ, are analyzed, as well as the company's eventual merger with Rio Tinto in 1995. The book provides backstories for the company's leaders and key players, making it relatable and insightful. Overall, it is recommended reading for those interested in Australian history and corporate strategic planning. [Extracted from the article]
