Abstract
The article explores the intellectual companionship and collaborative work between Leonora Carrington, a prominent surrealist painter, and Laurette Séjourné, an influential anthropologist, during the mid-twentieth century in Mexico. It highlights their engagement with Indigenous cultures and how their combined efforts contributed to the development of "ethnographic surrealism," expanding the geographical boundaries of surrealism beyond Europe. The article emphasizes their significant projects, including Séjourné's book *Supervivencias de un mundo mágico*, illustrated by Carrington, and Carrington's mural *El mundo mágico de los mayas*, which reflects their shared interests in magic, the occult, and the cultural richness of Mexico. Ultimately, it argues that their collaboration represents a fruitful intersection of art and anthropology, showcasing the importance of female friendships in the avant-garde movement.
