Abstract
Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme is perhaps the most misunderstood and misrepresented in international commentary. A recent article in this journal portrayed Pakistan's nuclear posture in apocalyptic terms and posed an unrealistic solution. Pakistan has, in reality, maintained an impeccable record of preventing any compromise of its nuclear assets. Since the early 2000s, Pakistan has continually strengthened its nuclear safeguards. Its nuclear doctrine has evolved over the decades, but always in response to the regional security environment, not out of irrational adventurism. Its nuclear programme, like that of any state, is a complex product of its security needs, historical experiences and international obligations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
